Going, Going, Gone!
Finally, it was all peace and quiet for me too. But my peace was not long-lived. Maxwell sold the house in September 1829. Years after that, in September 1841, an advertisement appeared in the newspaper announcing that the house was for sale. Can you imagine?!
Not even a word to consult me! The building was sold to the government. Ironic too, 'cos they did not even know what to do with the house since a new courthouse was erected on an adjacent site in 1839. It was opened on the 25th of October by the Recorder, Sir William Norris. Eventually, it was decided Maxwell's house would hold government offices.
