The Third Courthouse, 1865 - 1875
Really "GREAT" city planning I have to say! What a ruckus! The new courthouse was found unsuitable due to noise from Hallpike's boatyard next to it (they were really making a racket. I could even hear them from Maxwell's house!). It was condemned by the Grand Jury to be inappropriate as a Court of Justice, largely because of the noise. Designed by Major J F A McNair, another court house was erected and completed in 1865 which now forms part of the Empress Place building. In 1875, renovations to the original courthouse were completed, and the government moved the courthouse back!
